Description
B. Braun Askina Barrier Film Spray is a no‑sting, alcohol‑free, fast‑drying polymeric skin barrier that forms a transparent, breathable, waterproof protective layer. It permits oxygen and moisture vapour transmission while shielding intact or damaged skin from irritants, friction, and excess moisture. Suitable for sensitive and fragile skin across care settings, including adult and paediatric use (over 1 month old).
Key features
- Alcohol‑free and sting‑free; does not dry the skin
- Transparent, breathable film; waterproof yet allows MVTR and oxygen exchange
- Fast drying (~30 seconds) with long‑lasting protection
- Compatible under adhesive dressings and devices to help reduce dressing‑related trauma
- Single‑patient, multiple‑use; bottle contents sterile until first use
- Suitable for adults, children, and infants over 1 month old
Composition
- Hexamethyldisiloxane (disiloxane solvent)
- Acrylate copolymer film former
Intended uses
- Barrier against irritants, including urine/stool, wound exudate, and moisture
- Helps prevent friction‑ and moisture‑associated skin damage (maceration, excoriation); supports integrity of newly healed skin and helps prevent secondary breakdown
- Periwound and peristomal skin protection; use on peri‑wound skin under adhesives to reduce disruption to healing tissue
- Suitable for small cuts/tears and skin tears with intact skin flap (categories 1a, 1b, 2a, 2b)
- Protection around fixation sites for drainage tubes and external catheters
- Protection of high‑friction/vulnerable areas (heels, elbows, hips, toes); supports IAD care
Directions for use
- Cleanse the skin with an appropriate solution and dry thoroughly
- Spray from 10–15 cm (4–6 in) in a sweeping motion to apply an even coat; keep skin folds separated; allow ~30 seconds to dry
- Under adhesives/devices: allow film to dry completely before applying; reapply at each adhesive change
- Removal (if needed): use a medical adhesive remover; cleanse and dry before reapplication
Wear time and reapplication
- Typical wear time: 48–72 hours
- Without adhesives: reapply every 24–72 hours based on cleansing frequency; increase in heavy exposure situations
- For IAD: reapply when the protective sheen is no longer visible or per local protocol (e.g., after every 3 washes)
- Reapply at each stoma pouch change
Safety and precautions
- Flammable in liquid form—use in a well‑ventilated area; keep away from flames/ignition sources; allow to dry fully before covering
- Do not use on infected skin
- Not to be used as the sole covering where bacterial protection is required (e.g., IV catheter sites; open or partial-/full‑thickness wounds)
- Use of other barrier products (ointments/creams/lotions) may reduce effectiveness
- Discontinue use and seek medical advice if irritation occurs or persists
Storage and shelf life
- Store in original container at ambient conditions in a dry place away from heat/direct sunlight; keep out of reach of children
- Discard 28 days after opening
