Calogen by Nutricia is a ready-to-use, energy-dense long-chain triglyceride fat emulsion developed as a food for special medical purposes. It is designed for use under strict medical supervision as a low-volume energy supplement for people who need concentrated energy intake without added protein, fibre, or significant micronutrients. It can be taken orally, administered via tube feed, used as a 30 mL shot, or mixed into suitable foods and fluids.
Nutritional Profile
Calogen provides 4.5 kcal per mL, equivalent to 450 kcal per 100 mL and 135 kcal in a 30 mL serving. It contains 50 g fat per 100 mL, with 100% of energy derived from fat and all fat provided as long-chain triglycerides. The neutral formulation contains no protein, no fibre, and only about 0.1 g carbohydrate per 100 mL. Trace electrolytes are reported, including sodium at 7 mg per 100 mL and chloride at 0.1 mg per 100 mL.
The fat profile includes 5.3 g saturates, 30.4 g monounsaturates, and 14.3 g polyunsaturates per 100 mL, with an omega-6 to omega-3 ratio of 5:1. Neutral Calogen has a reported osmolality of about 5 mOsmol/kg H2O.
Uses and Presentation
This product is intended for the dietary management of disease-related malnutrition, high energy requirements, poor compliance with standard multi-nutrient oral nutritional supplements, and situations where fluid, volume, protein, residue, or selected electrolyte or mineral restriction is needed. It is available in Neutral and Strawberry flavours, commonly in 200 mL resealable bottles, with Neutral also available in 500 mL.
Ingredients and Important Information
The neutral formulation contains rapeseed oil, sunflower oil, demineralised water, and an emulsifier. Strawberry flavour includes added sugar, flavouring, and colour E120, so its carbohydrate content and osmolality are higher than the neutral version.
Shake well before use. Dosage should be determined by a healthcare professional; commonly referenced guidance is 30 mL three times daily unless otherwise advised. Calogen is not suitable as a sole source of nutrition, not for parenteral use, and not suitable for patients with galactosaemia. Store in a cool, dry place, do not freeze, and once opened refrigerate and use within 14 days.
