Description
Lamisil Cream 1% w/w is a topical antifungal treatment supplied in a 15 g pack for external cutaneous use only. It contains terbinafine hydrochloride 1% w/w in a white, smooth to almost smooth glossy cream. This formulation is used for common fungal skin infections, including tinea pedis, tinea cruris, tinea corporis, cutaneous candidiasis, and pityriasis versicolor.
How it works
Terbinafine is a broad-spectrum allylamine antifungal. It works by inhibiting squalene epoxidase, an enzyme involved in fungal cell membrane production. This leads to ergosterol deficiency and fungal cell death.
Directions for use
For adults, clean and dry the affected area before application. Apply a thin layer to the affected skin and the surrounding area once or twice daily, depending on the type of infection, and rub in gently. Wash hands after use. In areas where skin touches skin, such as folds, gauze may be used if needed.
Typical treatment durations are:
- Tinea pedis: 1 week
- Tinea corporis or tinea cruris: 1 to 2 weeks
- Cutaneous candidiasis: 1 to 2 weeks
- Pityriasis versicolor: 2 weeks
Medical review is recommended if there is no improvement after 2 weeks.
Important safety information
Do not use if there is known hypersensitivity to terbinafine or any excipient. Avoid contact with the eyes. Excipients including cetyl alcohol, stearyl alcohol, and benzyl alcohol may cause local skin reactions. Mild local effects such as itching, redness, burning, stinging, irritation, peeling, dry skin, rash, or contact dermatitis may occur. Rare allergic reactions require discontinuation.
No different dosage is usually required in elderly patients. Use in children is not recommended because clinical experience is limited. No clinically relevant topical drug interactions are listed. During pregnancy, use only if the potential benefit outweighs the risk, and avoid use while breastfeeding.
