Description
The LifeVac Anti-Choking Device is a portable, non-powered and non-invasive suction device designed to assist with foreign body airway obstruction (FBAO) in an emergency. It is intended for use as a second-line response when standard choking first-aid or basic life support measures have failed, are not possible, or cannot be performed effectively. It does not replace emergency medical assistance, established choking protocols or CPR.
How It Works
The device uses a face mask attached to a bellows or plunger unit with a one-way valve. When the mask is placed over the nose and mouth to create a seal, pushing the handle expels air away from the patient. A quick upward pull then creates negative pressure intended to help remove the airway obstruction.
Kit Contents and Sizing
LifeVac is supplied in a range of kit formats for home, travel, wall-mounted and professional settings. Core kits typically include the device and interchangeable masks in pediatric and adult sizes, while some versions use P, S, M, L and XL sizing. Mask choice should be based on obtaining the best facial fit and seal rather than age alone. Some kits also include a practice or test mask for familiarisation.
Use and Important Precautions
Basic use involves attaching the correct mask, forming a seal over the nose and mouth, compressing the bellows, then pulling up sharply without breaking the seal. Debris should be cleared from the mouth or mask and the process repeated if needed. If breathing does not return, standard emergency action and CPR should continue as appropriate.
Correct mask fit is essential for effective use. The device is generally described as single-use in an emergency because of cross-contamination risk, and routine re-use or sterilisation is not recommended. It is not intended for drowning victims, people who are breathing adequately on their own, or patients with endotracheal or tracheostomy airways.
Storage and Regulatory Information
Store at room temperature away from direct sunlight and temperature extremes. The device body is commonly described as having no expiry date, while masks may have expiry dates and should be replaced according to their labeling. In Australia, LifeVac is associated with ARTG No. 285082, and official sources also describe FDA authorization or registration in the USA.
