Description
Mattel UNO is the classic color-and-number matching card game designed for quick rounds and easy group play. Suitable for 2 to 10 players aged 7 and up, it combines simple rules with enough action cards to keep each round unpredictable. Players aim to be the first to empty their hand, and standard scoring can be used to continue play across multiple rounds until a target score of 500 points is reached.
How the game works
Each player begins with 7 cards. On a turn, a player discards 1 card that matches the top card of the discard pile by color, number, or action symbol, or plays a Wild card. If no play is made, the player draws 1 card. When a player has only 1 card remaining, they must call UNO; if caught before the next player acts, they draw 2 cards. Official classic play uses 1 card per turn, and stacking is not part of the standard rules.
Card types and effects
The deck includes number cards in blue, green, red, and yellow, along with Skip, Reverse, Draw Two, Wild, and Wild Draw Four cards. Reverse changes the direction of play, Skip passes over the next player, and Draw Two causes the next player to draw 2 cards and lose a turn. Wild cards change the current color. Wild Draw Four also makes the next player draw 4 cards and can only be played when no other card of the current color is playable, with challenge rules applying.
Deck versions and contents
Classic UNO decks contain 108 cards. Some newer Mattel editions use 112 cards by adding 3 Wild Customizable cards and 1 additional wild card, which may vary by version, such as Wild Shuffle Hands or Wild Swap Hands. The package includes cards and instructions.
